Hello Warriors,

PlasmaFyre received this cake for his birthday:

He says: "My dad spend 7~ ish hours making this beauty! Its supposed to resemble an AMX 50 100. I ate the turret and it was really good and filled with caking. The wheels are even made of Oreos!"

Don't know who you are but Happy Birthday PlasmaFyre and treasure your father! :)

CZ Tree Part 9 - T 50

Almost finished - tier 9 awaits! Right then. To understand the "funny" history behind the T 50, we first need to have a look at the rest of the TVP program. For what "TVP" actually is, please read part 8 or the dedicated TVP article (which is somewhat obsolete, but good as an overview). The entire program ran from 1945 to roughly 1950 (there are indications that some elements might have been developed even later, like the gas turbine engine for Czechoslovak tanks on which Alexej Surin was working in his twilight years). The whole program had multiple stages:

- TVP Koncept (tier 8, plans found in archives, first proposal by VTU, cca 1945)
- T 40 (tier 6 premium, plans fond in archives, Škoda's response to the Koncept, cca 1945)
- ČKD's response to the Koncept (1945? Nothing is known)
- intermediary stages 1945-1948 (little is known save for partial descriptions)
- T 50 (1948, Škoda, plans found but too late for the model - potential premium?)
- T 51 (1948, ČKD, plans found but too late for the model - potential premium?)
- T 50/51 (late 1949/1950, plans found, tier 10)

Random note: Dubánek (the "usual" source) tends to write the names of the T series with a dash (T-50), while the actual archive plans usually don't have it. WG chose on my recommendation to uphold the original designation.

Okay, now you might be a bit confused. T 50 is written in the official Wargaming branch as a tier 9 when I am writing there are no plans for it (or, rather, they came too late)? How can it be? Well, there's a story behind that - and a good one.

Fake TVP...

Tier 9 was always the most problematic tier of the entire branch. I mean - there were problems on other tiers too (such as the whole pain in the ass with the T-24, top configuration for LT Vz.38 and others) but tier 9 was a constant source of major problems. At the time of the first serious attempts to build the tree, tiers 8,9,10 looked like this:

- T-50 (back then still with dash)
- T-51 (ditto)
- T-50/51 (drawing known, we'll get to it in the next part).

The thing is, I had no idea how T-51 looks like except for some vague descriptions about not having the "pike nose" and having one less roadwheel. So the only realistically known drawings were the Koncept and the T 40 (which back then I thought was already a T-50 stage). In other words, you'd have practically identical tier 8 and tier 9 - and to top it off, tier 9 would have to be SERIOUSLY overbuffed to keep up. Well, that sucks. But fear not - enter the new contender: the "other" T 50, which I like to call "Pejčoch's TVP":

This is the very first drawing of the TVP medium tank, published (to my knowledge) roughly two decades ago by Ivo Pejčoch, a Czech historian in his article, dedicated to the TVP program. Remember that history with the fake looking T-24? Remember how I said it wouldn't be the last time we'd see strange shit appear by Ivo Pejčoch? Well now, this is it. This picture was later taken and used by M.Dubánek in his early article from 2009, "validating" it and spreading it even further. At first this picture was presented as the "Praga" version of TVP (T-51) but it doesn't have the correct number of roadwheels and it shouldn't have the pike nose. Nobody knows where this picture came from and it doesn't correspond to any of the TVP plans found in the archives by V.Francev and J.Tintěra. TLDR: we think Pejčoch made it up. Here's how he probably did it - check this out:

Does the hull look familiar? Yep, it's pretty much the same hull - this is Dubánek's drawing of a TVP-based tank destroyer from 1949 - by Škoda! Another proof that the ČKD connection to this "design" is false. And yes, the TD project is real, we have the plans. But what about the turret?

This is the Škoda T-17 light tank. As you can see, the turret design is practically identical - save for the scale. This was actually recognized by Yuri Pasholok - good catch! I didn't connect the dots myself until he pointed it out.

So, what we think Pejčoch did was he mashed together the TD hull, enlarged LT turret and called it a TVP. Well that's fucking great, there goes my chance of having a proper tier 9 right?

....turns into T 50

Or, does it? After all, what we have here is a design that:

- uses existing components (for which we have plans to present Wargaming)
- is described sufficiently in a book (by I.Pejčoch, the same author who made the drawing :P)
- is historical in the sense that it was not made up by me or Wargaming, it was presented by a renowned historian (Pejčoch) and validated in his article by another one (Dubánek)!

Totally legit!

*trollface*

And so it was that a design was made based on a single drawing of dubious raliability. Both elements (turret, hull) were made by Škoda, the Škoda TVP was called T 50... there you have it. "Pejčoch's TVP" turns into the T 50. And yes, it's totally legit to "cheat" this way - everything's permitted if you can argue well enough :)

It's too bad we didn't have the chance to talk to Mr.Pejčoch about this - because I would LOVE to know how he did it (or why). In any case - ta-da! Tier 9 is now no longer a problem. Is it realistic? Well, it GENERALLY resembles the real T 50 but looks sort of different. The model turned out beautifully though, the tank is simply pretty.

The "T 50" characteristics

As you can imagine, such a design is hard to assess in advance because many of the values will undergo "balance overhaul", which possibly includes armor. So, here are my best guesses for this design.

Weight - 35 to 40 tons, depending on configuration and armor. In the game it has two turrets modelled - one from the Pejčoch's drawing and the second - real one - from T 50/51.

Hull armor thickness: 65/40/40mm
Turret - stock: 100mm all around
Turret - elite: something like 112/84/84 (mantlet is cca 94mm thick) - the mantlet is external so it does provide extra protection

Mobility - let's say the vehicle will weigh 35 tons. Several engines come to mind:

- V-2 engine (500hp, was intended as a placeholder until the real engines are available, 14,29 hp/t)
- Škoda 16AH145 (750hp, 21,43 hp/t)
- Škoda AHK (1000hp, 28,58 hp/t)

 Guns are 100mm - D-10T and AK1 IIRC. D-10T is well-known, AK1 could have stats like this:

100mm AK1
Caliber: 100mm
Barrel length: L/55
Penetration: 265/325/50
Damage: 320/320/420

No autoloader for now. Again, just my guessing. I think they might have modelled the R11 as well (100mm L/80 lol) or the A20 (shorter variant of the R11, 100mm L/64,7), can't remember. Depression's alright though: -8/+20

So yea. Pretty extreme mobility, good gun, relatively poor armor - sounds like a CDC. Could be fun.

    Here it is:

    - Apparently Wargaming recently acquired a Sentinel tank in the US and are returning it to Australia after restoration;
    - According to product manager Maksim Chuvalov, WoT has not reached its peak of popularity yet;
    - The total number of players registered in Wargaming products on all platforms together is 150 million;
    - Next branch will be Czechoslovakia, there will also be a "Škoda factory" map, Berlin map and Studyanki map (Polish map from the movie Four Tankmen and a Dog);
    - The December patch will feature a complete overhaul of the game that will concern all players;
    - WG is developing two new maps that will bring unusual and previously unseen environment and elements;
    - According to Maksim Chuvalov, WoWs will be a successful game - even now the player increase is akin to the one of WoT, although they don't expect it to reach the level of success of WoT.

FV3805 Restoration Project: 1st Volunteer day Resume

    Hello Warriors,

the first volunteer day of the FV3805 Restoration was a success!

When Jingles and I arrived at the Wight Military & Heritage Museum a shift group was taking a break and got shown around the museum with a guide who explained a little bit about everything they have in display and as soon Ed Francis, one of the heads of the project and who works in the Bovington Tank Museum spotted us he rushed with a mysterious bag, he had inside a "Tanker Mechanic started-kit" (overall, Tool-kit belt and tools) that he gifted me. I felt so radiant!

I'm the type of woman who gets very pleased with such gifts and very happy that the Tool-belt didn't fall down to my feet, this one been wearing overalls and using tools since and while other girls were still playing with Barbies but no tool-belt would fit while helping Grandpa (who enjoys buying old car/motos to restore and then drive them like a lunatic thought the family properties with Rock music screaming out of his very 90's radio) and fixing my own Karts. Father just got tired of fixing them himself and taught me all I couldn't figure out of my own. Often would be dropped at the Kart circuit with my box/garage keys, and spend my weekends/holidays keeping my machines in good condition and only asking help to the staff to lift the back wheels and push the Kart forward for manual start-ups (Start-up switches and Recoil starters are for pussies!) until I was big/strong enough to do it myself! The Kart Circuit Staff were always pleased to help as they adopted me as their tiny girl mascot who would test and steal the manly-hood of 30-50 year old man by beating their times in racing competitions. It was evil but somehow enjoyable to see some reaching the point they would lose control of their Karts while desperately trying to not be passed or catching up with me. :P
Its safe to say... My family expected their first of my generation (me) to be a boy.

Anyways, I'm derailing here, enough of my childhood!

Many people showed up and worked incessantly the whole day in and on the "bae" FV3805. We actually managed to do way more in a day than anything we had planned/expected and according to Ed Francis 65% paint was stripped, hatches greased, engine inspected, gearbox eyeballed, floor plates changed and a fossilized cat was found and looked like it had spent a couple decades in there (Cool cat chose a badass urn to die in!)

Even Jingles got his hands on a nail gun and worked for awhile on the exterior! Everyone kept a very friendly atmosphere, sharing tools and helping each others. I chose to stay inside, scraped the paint in difficult areas (small metal bars on the right, batteries compartment corners and around my hatch, the driver's). It was hard to contain my William Riker's sh** eating grin and didn't want to go home, felt like fish in the water and found myself in the way back feeling annoyed that I didn't have time to finish one bit that was working on when we got told it was time to stop.

At the end the museum staff had a treat for us, they gave APC rides to everyone and they got to see the Centurion being driven. I was initially invited for a the tank ride on the museum arena but only one person could go... I saw on Jingles's eyes how much he wanted to go and "allowed" him to lose his "being in a moving tank" cherry experience. I know he loves the Centurion, its one of his favorite tanks and as much it pained to let this experience go, I will be driving tanks in a couple days (my training is going to start on beginning of next month) as this one is going be Bovigton's very first tame woman tank driver and will have far more chances than him. It seemed right and although it was a nice gesture don't be mistaken, I'm still a cat person and wouldn't do this for everyone! Specially when it comes to tank drives! :P

After the tank ride something happened to the Centurion... wont say much pretty sure he will enlighten you in tomorrow's Mingles with Jingles episode! :P

We ended the day having some drinks in the pub near the museum and having a BBQ.

It was an amazing experience and would recommend everyone! There will be more volunteering days in the future and even if you live far away, the museum even allows people to camp in their grounds!

Here is the photo album of this day (if you have photos do share them on the FV3805 Restoration FB page!):

    Hello warriors,

in 0.9.11, new sounds will apparently make an appearance! According to exclusive materials recorded by a WoT Youtuber Amway921, here's how things will sound:

Here is a guy testing it in WG studio - text by Redditer Senaya :

Listen to fuel engine, track moving and shooting
    https://youtu.be/P3FMKPsGFQM?t=51s

Listen to bots bouncing off your armour
    https://youtu.be/P3FMKPsGFQM?t=3m45s

    Listen to diesel engine
    https://youtu.be/P3FMKPsGFQM?t=8m6s

    Listen to arty shooting
    https://youtu.be/P3FMKPsGFQM?t=9m36s

Listen to your tank being on fire and then fuel leaking
    https://youtu.be/P3FMKPsGFQM?t=10m55s

Listen to your ammo rack being damaged
    https://youtu.be/P3FMKPsGFQM?t=11m18s

They claim that every sound on the map will be audible, so you will hear players fighting on the other side of the map (they said something like "if marker exists, you will hear it" so maybe it will only be audible in the 600m area around you). From now on you will be able to hear which gun is shooting at you, so you always know if you're targeted by E-100, arty or something else. Every module (engine, turret, tracks etc) will also get new sounds, along with pretty much everything else. Only sounds that will stay (for now) are crew voices and objects breaking (soon to be changed too). Now you won't have to read on screen what was damaged, you can tell what you need to fix just by listening to module sounds. Also, if you're playing arty, you will hear players shooting at you now.

Bonus: the famous old crit bell sound is making its return with this update

    Hello warriors,

as you probably know, there's a lot of media censorship of the "decadent capitalist influences" going on in Russia. The office responsible for such censorship is called Roskomnadzor - one of its functions is to "investigate potentially dangerous content".

According to a tweet on Roskomnadzor account, an investigation will be launched into the World of Tanks forums based on suspicions that they contain "illegal information".

What can that be we can only guess. Could also be an elaborate troll.. :)

    - Storm confirms that HD environmental models do not have proper size ("bus is too big"), it will be reworked during HD map overhaul
    - Centurion Action X turret roof effective armor is 200+ mm according to Storm
    - Centurion Action X sucks? "We made it the way it really was."
    - the frontal turret of Action X is pretty thick but Storm doesn't recommend using it to bounce shots like you can use the Soviet turrets
    - the sloped area above the mantlet is the weakspot of Action X (149 - 197mm EFF)
    - Storm confirms: armor is the only parameter that will not be touched in favour of balance
    - Vickers MBT would be two times more fragile than Action X Centurion
    - it's theoretically possible to give Action X two guns but the vehicle is practically ready, balanced and prepared for release
    - having no fume extractor on HD T34 is historical according to Storm, the model is based on this photo

    Hello Warriors,

here is the Czechoslovak tier 7 Konštrukta T-34/100:

    Description:

In the early 50's, the Czechoslovak military realized the T-34/85 tank that was being license-produced in Czechoslovakia was getting obsolete and issued an order in 1953 to the VTU military research institute to increase its combat value. One of the proposals in this program by Konštrukta Trenčín included adapting a Vz.44 S cannon (license-produced copy of the D-10T) for the T-34 chassis. It was presented to the Czechoslovak military in 1954 and gathered harsh criticism. The project had several major flaws such as limited ammunition capacity and poor gun depression amongst them. It was rejected in the June of 1954. Other projects of this program included an automatic loader for the 85mm gun or an automatically loaded 100mm gun installation. These were short-lived however as the attempts to upgrade the T-34 stopped in favour of purchasing the production license for the T-54.

The Birth of the Tiger I

The following is a transcribe of part of an original postwar interview with the Chief Technical Engineer[i] Kurt Arnoldt, of the Henschel firm's AFV Research and Experimental Establishment at Haustenbeck[ii]. The interview was conducted by Captain R.A. Harrison of GSI (Tech) 21st Army Group starting on Monday May 7th, through the 8th, 1945. Harrison arrived back at the 21st Army Group HQ on the May 13th. The typed interview copy is dated May 28th and stamped May 29th 1945.

I could have sat down and done it all… but it is 30 pages of material and that’s not counting the appendixes. So, I am transcribing parts of it at a time. Sharp eyed readers will note that it is similar, and different, with the version provided by Henschel designer Dr. Erwin Aders in Walter J. Spielbergers books. Many thanks to MadestCat for his assistance with the German sections, name corrections and searches. And many thanks to Shapeshifter for leading me to the interview to begin with. And lastly, to Vollketten, for his assistence in getting the last part done and to everyone else for listening to me ramble away...

    ~Nemo.

    BIRTH OF THE TIGER I.

The original order to construct a Tiger I was given to the firm Henschel in 1941. At the same time Dr. Ferdinand Porsche was allowed to develop his own idea of what the Tiger should be. Two versions of Tiger were eventually produced and were referred to, in industrial circles, as the Porsche Tiger and the Henschel Tiger.

In March 1942 Dr. Speer ordered Henschel and asked Porsche to have their respective prototype tanks ready for inspection by the Führer on 20th April, (Hitler’s birthday). Herr Arnoldt’s Henschel Tiger was not near completion in March and he advised the Director of Henschels that his tank could not be got ready in time. He was told that it must be ready at all costs as the Porsche Tiger would be ready and Henshel might have to revert to production of railway engines only if their Tiger was not a success.

Arnoldt was told to have the Henschel Tiger ready for loading on a train on 17th April for this journey to the Führerhauptquartier at RASTENBURG[iii]. All the engineers and employees at HAUSTENBECK were galvanized into motion and by dint of working day and night the Henschel Tiger was finally assembled 40 minutes before time on the day in question. The 40 minutes could not be spent in trying the tank out, but had to be spent in loading it on to a trailer so that it could be taken to the local station.
At 1120 hours on 19th April both the tanks arrived at the detraining station 11 kilometers from the Führer’s Hq. A special crane had been brought from LUKBECK[iv] to offload the two heavy tanks. The two tanks were unloaded, but the Porsche tank immediately bellied.

Herr Arnoldt went over to Dr. Porsche, when he saw this, and offered to tow Porsche out with the Henschel Tiger. Dr. Porsche was very angry, refused Arnold’s offer, and had his tank dug out. Present on this occasion were General Thomale[v], Dr. Rolland of Edelstahlwerke and the Director of the Mibelungen factory at St. VALENTIN[vi].

The 11 kilometers journey to RASTENBURG was then undertaken and took the best part of the day. Neither the Porsche or the Henschel Tiger could go more than a few yards without stopping for a general overhaul as neither tank had moved under its own power before. The final drive on the Henschel Tiger gave a lot of trouble and Herr Arnoldt had to hammer large nails into the mechanism to get the tank to work at all.

On the morning of the 20th April both tank were ready for inspection by the Führer. At 10 o’clock a courier arrived from the Führer to say that the tanks were not going to be inspected until 2 o’clock, whereupon  Herr Arnoldt had the Henschel Tiger’s final drive stripped down.

At 11 o’clock Hitler arrived to inspect the tanks causing considerable confusion in the Henschel camp. The Führer was accompanied by most of the leading Nazis including, Goering, Ribbentrop, Ley, Himmler, and Speer.

Hitler and Goering went up to the Henschel Tiger and examined it for a few seconds only. Goering remarked “My Führer, it is fantastic”(Nain Führer, das ist ja fantastisch[vii]). Hauptamtsleiter Saur[viii], who was in Hitler’s party said “Herr Stalin, will learn of this to his cost” (Na, Herr Stalin, wird davon nooh mo Kosten beko nen![ix])

None of the Nazi personalities appeared to have much of a clue as to tank design and construction and Hitler said nothing at all.

When both the tank prototypes had been inspected, General Fichtner[x] , who was officially in charge of the display, gave orders that both tanks should do a straight run of a few hundred yards to show their of speed. The Porsche Tiger started off and managed to do about 1200 yards at a speed of about 30 m.p.h. There was a general sigh of relief among many officials and senior officers who knew all the time that neither the Porsche or the Henschel tanks were in the least ready for trials. Then it was Herr Arnoldt’s turn.

He raced off at full speed (about 25 m.p.h) and managed to do about 900 yards. Then he turned the tank round and began the return trip. By this time the temperature in the engine compartment had risen to 110°C. Smoke was coming from the final drive and engine compartment and the crew could hardly breath.

Arnoldt brought his tank to a halt about 200 yards short of where Hitler was standing. If he had gone any further the tank would have caught fire. An official in Hitler’s entourage signalled Arnoldt to drive on. He deliberately misconstreed the signal, got out of the tank and walked towards the Führer. It was explained to him that the Führer wished the Henschel tank to approach and not just Herr Arnoldt himself. Arnoldt kept up a flow of conversation during which time the tank was cooling off. Hitler then decided  that he would be photographed between Herr Arnoldt and Dr. Porsche. After this photograph has been taken Hitler made a short speech to the assembled body of people and thanked all concerned for their work. Hitler and most of the high ranking Nazis then lost interest in the demonstration and moved off.

Some of the heads of the AFV industry began to talk over the results of the demonstration. Arnoldt heard Saur remark that the Henschel Tiger was “a lame duck”. Herr Rolland of the Edelstahlwerke said that the Porsche Tiger was faster than the Henschel Tiger. Arnoldt himself had an opportunity of speaking for a few minutes to Dr. Speer. He suggested that a further trial should be carried out to show the steering capacity of the two tanks, knowing that the Porsche Tiger could hardly be steered at all.  His suggestion was later put into practice and the Henschel Tiger put up quite a good performance. The Porsche Tiger could only be steered with the greatest difficulty and a number of officials noticed that the Porsche Tiger, though fast, was quite unmanoeuvrable.

Later on further tests with both prototype tanks were carried out at KUMMERSDORF, HAUSTENBECK, BERKA-EISENACH and Henschel was given the order to proceed with the production of the Tiger E. Further production of Porsche Tigers was stopped and about[xi] 80 of the existing 90 Porsche Tigers were converted into SP carriages for mounting an 8.8 cm Pak 43 (“Elephant”). All the Porsche Tiger turrets were scrapped.

    Hello Warriors,

on the EU server, until Saturday 26 September at 07:00 CEST (UTC +2) we will have x3 XP.

As much as I enjoy some extra XP and I'm glad that EU is doing this...Special XP always attracts the falmer players out of their caves. After the summer holidays I actually find myself craving for some regular x2 XP. No kids... no Falmers (or less), just perfect!

    Hello Warriors,

Armored Warfare needs you to frack stuff up!
On 24 and 25 September they will be stress testing the servers and opening the doors to everyone (no Early Access requirement), for those unaware this is a normal process game companies perform before releasing their game into Open which it seems is very close. Download will be available on 23 September at this page: http://aw.my.com/us/ea

If you want to know what to expect out of the stress test hop into their link: http://aw.my.com/us/news/general/introducing-public-stress-test
